Green Tea or White Tea?

Green tea has an endless list of health benefits which has been well studied and documented. I initially started drinking green tea for weight loss as numerous studies have indicated that green tea is known for its thermogenic effects as it has the ability to raise body temperature which speeds up the metabolism and burns more calories. I then came across a friend who was drinking white tea instead of green tea and investigated this a little further…

White tea has the same properties as green tea in that it has undergone very little processing, contains antioxidants, caffeine and assists with weight loss. Green tea and white tea have the same health benefits.

I have now opted to consume 1-2 cups of white tea per day rather than green tea as for me, it tastes a whole lot nicer. I also substitute white tea for coffee as it still gives me a caffeine hit and has zero calories.

For me personally, I prefer the taste of white tea as it is lighter and sweeter, compared to the grassy taste of green tea. Studies show that white tea actually has more active cancer fighting antioxidants and more caffeine than its counterpart, green tea.

In addition to assisting with weight loss, green tea and white tea also have the following health benefits:

  • Reducing cancer cells in the body
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Lowering high cholesterol levels
  • containing antiviral and antibacterial properties due to being high in antioxidants
  • Assisting the immune system

I prefer the organic alternative to green or white tea by purchasing fresh tea leaves from your local organic shop rather than the highly marketed and mass produced tea bags in the grocery stores. Just add the fresh tea leaves to boiling water the same as a tea bag.

Be sure to consume green tea or white tea earlier in the day as it can cause insomnia due to its caffeine content.

Try opting for a cup of white tea next time and see how you go.
